Bus Driver Still on the Road After Hitting 10 Drivers in 12 Years

Bus Driver Still on the RoadBus driver Charles Butler is still driving on the roads of Broward County despite hitting ten cars, losing his license five times, and showing up late and sparking a lawsuit.

In one of his accidents, it cost taxpayers about $73,005. A passenger from the other vehicle in 2009 accident where Butler was involved was sent to the hospital for a knee surgery.

Broward County commissioners voted to settle the claim in October, looking at Butler’s driving history but keeping the information private in a confidential county attorney memo which was later released to the Sun Sentinel.

“I looked at his record,” remembers former County Commissioner Ilene Lieberman, the lone “no” vote on the settlement. “I was shocked that he was still employed.”

To date, Butler has been disciplined 18 times. He also served a total of 18 days of suspension for tardiness since he started working in 2001. He served a total of 17 days of suspension for his involvement in 21 bus accidents.
