Limo Fire That Killed 5 Was Due to Mechanical Problems

a burning carAccording to California Highway Patrol, a mechanical problem caused the limousine fire that killed five nurses who were trapped at the back of the vehicle. The results of the investigation and the 911 calls were released last Monday.

According to CHP Capt. Mike Maskarich, the fire broke out on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge on May 4 due to a catastrophic failure of the rear suspension system. The air suspension failure caused the spinning driveshaft to come in contact with the floor pan resulting in friction that ignited carpets and set the limo on fire.
