Mandatory Car Inspections in North Carolina

Mandatory Car Inspections in North CarolinaA proposed bill aiming to repeal the requirement for annual vehicle safety inspections for North Carolina drivers has the potential to be dangerous and should not be passed. The N.C. House Bill 59 might save drivers money of $13.60 annually, however it could cost greater down the road because it compromises safety.

Those who support the bill mention studies like the one conducted by the Program Evaluation Division at the N.C. General Assembly. In this study, it is shown that there is little evidence that a relationship exists between safety inspections and reduced motor vehicle accidents.

If supporters of the bill take issue with the quality of the inspection programs, as they do, why not improve the programs rather than scrapping them? And it surely $13.60 is not too much for a person to spend on potentially saving a life.
