Opioids May Increase Risk for Car Accidents

Opioids May Increase Risk for Car AccidentsResearchers from Ontario say that intake of opioid painkillers, even in minimum doses, increases your chances of getting into a car accident. These drugs act as a sedative resulting in a decrease in alertness. Patients taking these drugs are warned of these effects to prevent any car accidents or other mishaps.

“What was surprising to us was this increased risk started even at what many people consider to be fairly low doses of opioids,” said Tara Gomes, one of the researchers, at JAMA Internal Medicine, formerly Archives of Internal Medicine.
It’s suggested that when people are prescribed opioid drugs, they be restricted from driving or when absolutely necessary, be accompanied by a relative or a friend.
